CTF Applauds FCC Review of Pole Attachment Solutions to Speed Broadband Deployment

February 24, 2022

WASHINGTON D.C. – Connect the Future (CTF) released the following statement from executive director Zachary Cikanek welcoming Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to consider options for speeding broadband deployment by ensuring easy, predictable access to utility poles during an upcoming public meeting on March 16:

“We are very pleased to see that the FCC, under the leadership of Chairwoman Rosenworcel, will be examining solutions to address the pole attachment issues that have long stymied efforts to close the digital divide. Today, an ineffective process for attaching broadband infrastructure to poles is slowing or even preventing access to connectivity for millions – especially in rural areas where there are more poles than homes.

“Connectivity champions in Congress like Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Roger Wicker (R-MS), along with CTF supporters across the country, have worked hard to shine a spotlight on pole-related reforms to maximize infrastructure investments and speed broadband deployment to unserved areas. Closing this gap will not only unlock new opportunities for rural businesses, families, and farmers, but a recent analysis shows that it could also help fuel billions in economic growth.

“CTF applauds the FCC for taking this important step, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to ensure a fast, fair, and more cost-effective process for utility pole access, replacements, and dispute resolution.”
